A Legacy of Excellence

At the beginning of the 20th century, Quinta da Ferraria, with an area of around 90 hectares, was owned by Júlio César Santos, who sold it to the Viscount of Assentiz, becoming part of his significant estate. The economic activity of the property was mainly agricultural, specifically focused on the production of wine, olive oil, and wheat. The Viscount of Assentiz, one of the last owners of this Quinta da Ferraria, was a great equestrian enthusiast, considered one of the best Portuguese riders of the time. He kept beautiful horses on the estate, which also featured an open riding arena and, in the valley, an area designated for a jumping obstacle course for equestrian exercise.
Honoring the Past,
Shaping the Future

In 1999, the Meneses family established the Coudelaria da Ferraria with a commitment to breeding purebred Lusitanos to the highest standards of excellence. As a natural evolution driven by the brand's growth and the trust of clients, the Quinta da Ferreria was acquired in 2005 to complement the project, providing essential infrastructure.

Pure Blood
Lusitano
Ridden for about 5,000 years, the world's oldest saddle horse arrives at the threshold of the 21st century, reclaiming the splendor it had two thousand years ago when the Greeks and Romans recognized it as the best saddle horse of antiquity. Selected as a breed and combat horse over the centuries, it is a versatile horse whose docility, agility, and courage allow it today to compete in almost all modern equestrian sports, confronting the best specialists. At the dawn of the year 2000, the Purebred Lusitano is once again sought after as a sport and leisure horse and as a breeder, due to its rare qualities of character and genetic antiquity. A "hot-blooded" horse like the Thoroughbred and the Arabian, the Purebred Lusitano is the result of thousands of years of selection, which gives it an "empathy" with the rider superior to any modern breed. Its rarity results from a very small population of about 2,000 breeding mares. In Portugal, the birthplace of the breed, only about 1,000 mares are in production. In Brazil, there are 600; in France, 200; with the rest distributed across Mexico, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the United States of America. In the 21st century, the Purebred Lusitano will always be the horse par excellence for Equestrian Art and Bullfighting, but beyond being the horse that gives the greatest pleasure to ride, it will continue to surprise with its natural aptitude for jumping, dressage, and competitive driving.
